If you're thinking of importing an Iceland Sheepdog from another country, there is some important information available on the American breed club website. This is especially urgent if you plan to show, compete in CKC or AKC events, or breed your dogs. In these cases the dog you're purchasing must have either an offical FCI export pedigree if born overseas, or be individually registered with the CKC, if born in Canada.
Now that the Icelandic Sheepdog is an AKC recognized breed, dogs brought into Canada from the US must have full, individual AKC registration before they will be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club.
If your Icelandic Sheepdog is only intended to be a pet, these registration issues may not seem important to you. However, it's still important to support breeders of registered dogs. Breeding of unregistered dogs diminishes the gene pool of the breed since the unregistered dogs are lost to the larger breeding population. The breeders of unregistered dogs may be supplying wonderful family pets but they are not contributing to the genetic strength or diversity of the breed.
